This black and white photograph, source unknown, was taken at the mouth of the Carmel River just below the the Ocean View Avenue staircase. Before the river mouth was breached by a dozer, near the Ribera Trails, the river would naturally carve a path across the beach and into the ocean at the north end of Carmel River State Beach. The long and shallow river mouth would provide the trout opportunity to enter the ocean at their pace and prevent easy access of predatory fish into the lagoon.
